Anesthesiology

The Anesthesiology faculty of Weill Cornell Medical College are engaged in investigating a wide variety of topics relevant to anesthesia, critical care and pain medicine for the benefit of our current and future patients.

Current research efforts include:

  • Mechanisms of anesthesia, to better define how a diverse group of pharmacological agents produce anesthesia
  • Cardiovascular physiology, exploring how the heart adapts to the stresses of anesthesia and surgery
  • Neuropharmacology and cell signaling, to understand at the molecular level how drugs affect neuronal function
  • Neuromuscular pharmacology, developing and evaluating novel neuromuscular blocking drugs

Welcome to our Department!!

Dr. Paul M. Heerdt, and Dr. Hugh C. Hemmings, Jr.

The Department of Anesthesiology was honored to have Professor John W. Severinghaus as a guest May 15th through May 17th. Dr. Severinghaus spoke to many of our faculty members and residents and gave lectures during his visit. He gave the Grand Rounds lecture on Monday date entitled “Gadgeteering for Healthcare”, and a talk to the Cardiac Anesthesia Group on Tuesday date entitled "Takuo Aoyagi and His Discovery of Pulse Oximetry". Both presentations were outstanding and generated considerable discussion.

The Department of Anesthesiology would like to welcome our newest Van Poznak Research Scholar, Vanessa Yasmin Calderon, MD. Her main area of focus in research is patient safety and quality improvement. One of two former scholars to graduate from our Residency program, Dr. Alexander Proekt, is currently completing a Fellowship at Rockefeller University in collaboration with the lab of Dr. Hugh C. Hemmings, Jr. here at Weill Cornell Medical College. During his Fellowship he will be investigating the hypothesis that sensory stimulation delivered to a lightly anesthetized subject may elicit a state transition in the thalamocortical networks that results in emergence of consciousness. Dr. Proekt has received the title of Instructor of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College & we welcome him to our team. Another former Van Poznak Scholar and recent graduate of our Residency program is Dr. Peter Fleischut. Dr. Fleischut is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College. He serves as the Deputy Quality and Patient Safety Officer for the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, leading the upgrade of the hospital's Medical Event Reporting System. He is one of the founding members of the Housestaff Quality Council©, working to engage residents in quality and patient safety at the institution.

Congratulations!

The Department of Anesthesiology would like to congratulate Dr. Crina Nimigean who was recently awarded the Irma T. Hirschl Career Scientist Award. This award is designed to support talented biomedical scientists in their academic research careers. Great job, Dr. Nimigean!

Alessio Accardi, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biophysics in Anesthesiology, has received funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for an R01 research grant entitled "Structure and Function of Chloride Channels and Transporters," in the amount of $1,536,533 for the period of April 1, 2010 - March 31, 2015.

Crina Nimigean, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biophysics in Anesthesiology, has received funding from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for an R01 research grant entitled "Molecular Mechanisms of K Channel Permeation and Gating," in the amount of $1,271,290 for the period of September 10, 2010 - August 31, 2014.

Dr. Alex Proekt awarded FAER grant!
The Department of Anesthesiology would like to congratulate Dr. Alex Proekt for receiving the Mentored Research Training Grant - Basic Science (MRTG-BS) which is a two-year grant awarded for Basic Science Research. Good luck to Dr. Proekt on his continued success in the department.

The Department of Anesthesiology announces the launch of a completely renovated Research website, which provides a source of general information regarding research, practice and policies.

Anesthesiology Department Researchers Awarded Recovery Act Funding
Drs. Hugh C. Hemmings, Jr. and Crina Nimigean have each been granted supplemental awards for the research they are conducting in our department. Dr. Hemmings was awarded supplemental funds for two of his active grants. His award money will go toward his research focused on cell signaling mechanisms in global cerebral ischemia and the synaptic mechanisms of general anesthetics. Dr. Nimigean's supplemental funds will go toward elucidation of ion channel structure and function. The Anesthesiology Department would like to congratulate Dr. Hemmings and Dr. Nimigean and wish them continued success in their research!
